5 Ethics of Right Versus Right: The Librarian’s Dilemma Ethical Principles & Paradigms Case Reading - Other ethics-hr belief systems, political culture, community vs individual rights, security vs privacy, role of government contemporary n/a
Summary: This 5-part activity builds quickly through a values framework to analyze ethical dilemmas: right vs. right. Each part adds a layer of reasoning to walk through the main idea: a true ethical dilemma is a choice between equally important competing values: 1) individual vs community, 2) long-term vs short-term, 3) mercy vs justice, and 4) loyalty vs truth. Whichever values we favor will reveal our ethical thinking among three main approaches to ethics: ends-based, rule-based, or care-based thinking. Includes a DEPPP chart to juxtapose multiple perspectives. This framework of "ethical paradigms" can then be applied to policy cases to examine the role of government as a balancing act where serious trade-offs are made that favor one value over another, often determined by political culture.
