Summary: This overview is a specialized table of contents to assist review of database materials for lesson planning. In outreach to local high schools, USC student volunteers in the Teaching International Relations Program (TIRP) are equipped to teach analytical tools using cases and activities for decision-making and problem-solving. Because the database serves a variety of projects, custom tags will select limited collections designated for TIRP topics. Guides for selected items will point to further database resources.

Summary: Dynamics of policy-making in multiethnic societies - focused on conflict surrounding competition for limited resources. A role-play set in the context of a nation's legislative body. Four hypothetical ethnic groups with power cards (senate votes) must promote interests while avoiding strikes or acts of terrorism. Students develop policy priorities, bargain, and analyze factors underlying ethnic conflict. Connects directly to "the identity continuum" to consider how ethnic identity relates to state identity and nation building. (Part of HSLC 2006: Iraq)

5 Equality is an Ideal: Dimensions & Distinctions Continuum - Other Think-Pair-Share equal-id, equal-rts governance, human rights, social equality, American Dream, meritocracy contemporary United States
Summary: A 3-step activity. 1) a continuum worksheet to rate progress toward five forms of "perfect equality" based on personal opinion about life today in the United States, 2) a second continuum combines the previous five forms to distinguish between political equality and social equality. Includes overheads to record a group poll of lowest & highest ratings where students explain differences in their ratings relative to others' reasoning and evidence. PPT provides an overview of factors for Step 3 for students to identify factors and trace dynamics of "Four Worlds of Equality" as 4W of the American Dream. Students can then apply their 4W analysis to legislation, Supreme Court decisions and NPR cases that focus on equality.

6 Evolution of Ideas: Equality Continuum - Equality Think-Pair-Share equal-id, equal-rts, equal-time, equal-continuum governance, beliefs, equality, identity, human rights contemporary and 1700s, 1800s United States, global
Summary: Foundational activity. A multi-step introduction to the equality continuum. An A-B-C continuum series -- "Black & White - or in between" -- where students must cite evidence from writings by 6 historical figures (inc. Lincoln, Paine, Clemens) in order to place these men on a spectrum that distinguishes views about cultural difference. First, students "place the adjectives" to examine varied usage and relationships between concepts. The Option A and Option B continuums are similar in theme but use very different concepts/terms. Among database materials, the continuums are applied to historical policy decisions and NPR cases that track the American journey toward "a more perfect union". Option B extends to the Option C continuum to examine international issues e.g. genocide and humanitarian intervention as outlined in the Responsibility to Protect (R2P).

The interactive powerpoint is a visual support that includes a color-coded dimension for students to identify the branches of government and types of laws, distinguishing between Supreme Court decisions, congressional acts, and executive orders. Referenced as "the equality timeline" -- it directly supports the equality continuum with policies matched to those listed for the Option B continuum. This timeline can also be used as a stand-alone activity and reference. It is a relatively short and highly useful activity to create historical context and illustrate the dynamics of an evolving ideal.
